VOTER VITALS December 2023 Edition – National Tracking Poll

The December 2023 edition of Voter Vitals – a nationwide tracking poll conducted by LSG for the Partnership for America’s Health Care Future – shows the threat of a potential government shutdown leads a majority of likely voters to be less confident in the ability of a new government-run health insurance system to meet the needs of the Americans enrolled in it. A growing majority of likely voters trust the free market more than the federal government to manage health care.

THE FACTS

  • A growing majority of likely voters (61%, +7% since May 2023) trust the FREE MARKET more than the federal government to manage health care.
  • The most popular health care reform proposal remains building on and improving our current system (67% support). Meanwhile, a majority do NOT support Medicare for All (49% support) or the public option (48% support).
  • A growing majority of likely voters would be UNWILLING to pay more for health care (78%, +5% since May 2023) or in taxes (73%, +5% since 2023) to fund the creation of a public option.
  • The threat of a potential government shutdown leads a majority of likely voters (55%) to be LESS confident in the ability of a new government-run health insurance system to meet the needs of the Americans enrolled in it, and the vast majority are CONCERNED about the access (83%), cost (83%), long-term fiscal impacts (73%), and size (59%) of government-run proposals.
  • The vast majority (80%) believe the need for mental health care will INCREASE over the next decade, and most (81%), believe it is IMPORTANT for the federal government to increase funding for mental health services.

THE TRUTH

When it comes to America’s health care future, it is clear voters do NOT support creating unaffordable, unproven government-controlled health insurance systems like the public option or Medicare for All. Instead, voters want our lawmakers to continue building on what’s working in health care to expand access to affordable, high-quality health coverage and care for every American.
