VOTER VITALS February 2024 Edition – National Tracking Poll

The February 2024 edition of Voter Vitals – a nationwide tracking poll conducted by LSG for the Partnership for America’s Health Care Future – shows that an overwhelming majority of voters continue to support building on America’s current health care system more than government-run health care systems like the public option. The threat of another potential government shutdown makes voters less confident in the ability of a new government-run health insurance system to meet the needs of Americans. Also, voter satisfaction with our overall health insurance system has increased as national conversation around government-run proposals has dwindled.

THE FACTS

  • Voter satisfaction with our health insurance system overall (50%, +7% since November 2023) and individual plans (75%, +5% since November) has INCREASED
  • The most popular health care reform proposal remains building on and improving our current system (70% support, +3% since November 2023), and an overwhelming majority (73%) prefer to build on our current system than create a public option.
  • A majority of likely voters continue to be UNWILLING to pay any more for health care (79%) or in taxes (72%) to fund the creation of a public option.
  • The threat of a potential federal government shutdown makes a majority of likely voters (56%) LESS confident in the ability of a new government-run health insurance system to meet the needs of Americans.
  • The vast majority are CONCERNED about access (82%), cost (81%), workforce (79%), and long-term fiscal impacts (72%) of government-run systems.

THE TRUTH

When it comes to America’s health care future, it is clear voters do NOT support creating unaffordable, unproven government-controlled health insurance systems like the public option or Medicare for All. Instead, voters want our lawmakers to continue building on what’s working in health care to expand access to affordable, high-quality health coverage and care for every American.
